V-게 되다 — to come to … · to end up … — a change that came about

To come to … · to end up … — a change that came about. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 1: 이제 매운 것도 잘 먹게 됐어요 (I can even eat spicy food now — how things changed).

What it means

-게 되다 says that something has come about — through time, through practice, or because of other people and circumstances — rather than simply because you decided it. Take 다 off and add 게 되다; 받침 does not matter: 먹다 → 먹게 되다, 알다 → 알게 되다, 좋아하다 → 좋아하게 되다. The tense goes on 되다: 됐어요 (= 되었어요) for a change that has happened — 이제 매운 것도 잘 먹게 됐어요 'now I can even eat spicy food', 동아리에서 유나 씨를 알게 됐어요 'I got to know Yuna at the club' — and 될 거예요 for one that is coming: 다음 달부터 회사에서 일하게 될 거예요. Koreans also use -게 됐어요 to share their own news modestly: 다음 주에 부산으로 출장을 가게 됐어요 sounds as if the chance came to you, not as if you are boasting. It goes with -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 as well: 이제 혼자 병원에 갈 수 있게 됐어요. Use -게 되다 with verbs; with adjectives, use -아/어지다 (Grammar 1).
