V-(으)ㄴ 후에 (1B 복습·확장) — after …ing
After …ing. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 1: 이제 매운 것도 잘 먹게 됐어요 (I can even eat spicy food now — how things changed).
What it means
-(으)ㄴ 후에 means 'after doing …': the action in front is finished first. It is the past modifier -(으)ㄴ you learned in Level 2A (어제 본 영화) + 후에 'after'. After a 받침 add 은 후에 (먹은 후에, 씻은 후에); after a vowel add ㄴ 후에 (본 후에, 끝난 후에, 운동한 후에). ㄹ words drop the ㄹ (만들다 → 만든 후에, 놀다 → 논 후에), ㄷ words change ㄷ to ㄹ (듣다 → 들은 후에, 걷다 → 걸은 후에), and ㅂ words change ㅂ to 우 (돕다 → 도운 후에). With a noun use N 후에 (Level 1B): 수업 후에, 식사 후에. -았/었- never goes in front — the -(으)ㄴ already means 'finished' — and the tense is on the last verb: 저녁을 먹은 후에 산책했어요. -고 나서 (Level 2A) means almost the same and is very common in conversation; -(으)ㄴ 후에 is also the usual form on notices, schedules and medicine bags. You will also hear -(으)ㄴ 다음에 with the same meaning.
