N 중에서 — among … — picking one out of a group

Among … — picking one out of a group. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 10: 떡볶이 만들어 봤어요? (Have you made tteokbokki? — cooking and casual speech).

What it means

중에서 means 'among, out of' — it picks one (or some) out of a group. Put it straight after a noun, with or without a 받침: 한국 음식 중에서, 친구들 중에서, 셋 중에서 'out of the three', 이 중에서 'out of these'. In speech 중에 is just as common. You already used it in Level 1B with 더 and 제일: 떡볶이하고 김밥 중에서 뭐가 더 매워요? Now use it with any question word — 뭐가 for things, 누가 for people, 어디가 for places, 언제가 for times — and with any verb: 과일 중에서 뭐를 제일 자주 먹어요? 셋 중에서 뭐 먹을래? With two things 더 is usual; with three or more, 제일 or 가장. The answer often drops 중에서: 떡볶이가 제일 맛있어요. Compare 우리 반에서 누가 제일 키가 커요? (in our class) with 우리 반 친구들 중에서 … (among my classmates) — both are fine. 중 is the same word as in 회의 중이에요 (Lesson 2A-9): the middle.
