V-아/어 드리다 — doing something for someone you respect — offering help

Doing something for someone you respect — offering help. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 8: 좀 도와주시겠어요? (Could you help me? — asking and offering help).

What it means

-아/어 드리다 means doing something for someone you respect — an older person, a teacher, your boss, a customer. 드리다 is the polite 주다 you met with 께 in Lesson 1B-9 (할머니께 과일을 드려요); here it follows another verb, just like -아/어 주다: ㅏ or ㅗ → 아 드리다 (잡아 드려요, 도와 드려요), other vowels → 어 드리다 (들어 드려요, 가르쳐 드려요), 하다 → 해 드리다 (안내해 드려요). To offer help, say 드릴게요 'I'll do it for you' (-(으)ㄹ게요, Lesson 1B-3) or ask 드릴까요? 'shall I …?': 가방을 들어 드릴까요? — 네, 고마워요. The person who gets the help takes 께: 할아버지께 길을 가르쳐 드렸어요. Choose by who gets the help: for yourself, a friend or someone younger, use 주다 (친구가 도와줬어요 · 후배에게 노트를 빌려 줬어요); for someone above you, 드리다; when someone above you does it for you, 주시다 (할머니가 택배를 받아 주셨어요). Shop and office staff use 드리다 with customers all day: 안내해 드릴게요, 바꿔 드릴게요.
