N에서부터 · N에게로 — all the way from … · toward (a person) — two particles you know, made a little wider

All the way from … · toward (a person) — two particles you know, made a little wider. Korean grammar for upper beginner learners — Level 2B, lesson 8: 좀 도와주시겠어요? (Could you help me? — asking and offering help).

What it means

Both are particles you know, with one more piece. 에서부터 is 에서 'from (a place)' (Lesson 1B-11) + 부터 'starting from' (Lesson 1B-4). It stresses where something starts — often 'all the way from' — and usually comes with 까지: 서울역에서부터 집까지 걸어왔어요. After 여기, 거기 and 어디 it is usually shortened: 여기서부터, 어디서부터. For times and order, 부터 alone is still the word: 아홉 시부터, 처음부터. 에게로 is 에게 'to (a person)' (Lesson 1B-9) + 로 'toward' ((으)로, Lesson 1B-11). It shows movement toward a person: 아이가 엄마에게로 뛰어갔어요, 택배가 저한테로 잘못 왔어요. In speech say 한테로; for someone you respect, 께로. With 주다 and 보내다, plain 에게 · 한테 is more usual: 친구한테 택배를 보냈어요. Neither particle changes with 받침, and the tense goes on the verb at the end. A question you will hear at any police station or lost-and-found: 어디에서부터 어디까지 가셨어요?
