N(이)라고 하다 — passing on what someone said — nouns

Passing on what someone said — nouns. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 1: 동아리 환영회를 한다고 해요 (They say there is a club welcome party).

What it means

(이)라고 하다 passes on words that end in a noun — what something or someone is. The 이에요/예요 of the original becomes (이)라고, with the same 받침 choice: 이라고 after a consonant (학생이라고, 2층이라고, 금요일이라고) and 라고 after a vowel (6시라고, 3교시라고, 선배라고). 아니에요 becomes 아니라고: 「저는 학생이 아니에요.」 → 마크 씨가 학생이 아니라고 해요. You met this ending in 2A when you gave your name — 저는 안나라고 해요 — and it is also inside the question 뭐라고 했어요? (뭐 + 라고). Watch the tense: the past 이었어요/였어요 becomes 이었다고/였다고, with 다고 and not 라고 (작년에는 3학년이었다고 해요), and -(으)ㄹ 거예요 ends in the noun 거, so it becomes -(으)ㄹ 거라고 (금요일에 갈 거라고 해요).
