A/V-다고 하다 — passing on what someone said — verbs and adjectives

Passing on what someone said — verbs and adjectives. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 1: 동아리 환영회를 한다고 해요 (They say there is a club welcome party).

What it means

-다고 하다 passes on what someone said or wrote — a friend's words, a notice, the news. Start from the plain form you learned in 2B, the diary form (먹는다, 간다, 바쁘다), and add 고 해요: 유나: 「환영회를 해요.」 → 유나 씨가 환영회를 한다고 해요. Verbs take -는다고 after a consonant (먹는다고, 읽는다고) and -ㄴ다고 after a vowel (간다고, 한다고); a stem ending in ㄹ drops the ㄹ (만들다 → 만든다고, 열다 → 연다고). Adjectives, and 있다 and 없다, simply take -다고 (바쁘다고, 재미있다고, 없다고) — never 없는다고. The tense of the original stays, and after -았/었- or -겠- every word takes -다고: 등록했어요 → 등록했다고, 가겠어요 → 가겠다고. The person who said it takes 이/가 (유나 씨가), a group takes 에서 (학생회에서), and 저는 in the original disappears. 해요 passes the words on now; 했어요 means they said it earlier — and for a teacher, 하셨어요.
