N(이)래요 — the short form with nouns — 'they say it is N'

The short form with nouns — 'they say it is N'. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 1: 동아리 환영회를 한다고 해요 (They say there is a club welcome party).

What it means

(이)래요 is (이)라고 해요 said quickly: 라고 해 shrinks to 래, so 2층이라고 해요 → 2층이래요 and 6시라고 해요 → 6시래요. The 받침 choice is the one you know from 이에요/예요: 이래요 after a consonant (2층이래요, 금요일이래요) and 래요 after a vowel (6시래요, 선배래요); 아니에요 becomes 아니래요. It belongs with friends, chat and everyday talk, and a rising voice turns it into a question: 정말 금요일이래요? In the past, 이었어요/였어요 becomes 이었대요/였대요 (작년에는 3학년이었대요), and -(으)ㄹ 거예요 becomes -(으)ㄹ 거래요 (금요일에 갈 거래요). Spelling: 래, from 라고 해 — not 레.
