V-(으)라고 · -지 말라고 · -아/어 달라고(주라고) 하다 — passing on instructions and favours — tell someone to …, not to …, to do something for me

Passing on instructions and favours — tell someone to …, not to …, to do something for me. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 2: 방을 바꿔 달라고 해 봐 (Ask them to change your room — passing on requests).

What it means

-(으)라고 하다 passes on an instruction or a request: what someone told you, or someone else, to do. Start from the -(으)세요 the person said and change it to -(으)라고, with the same 받침 rule: after a 받침 add 으라고 (먹으라고, 읽으라고), after a vowel or ㄹ add 라고 (가라고, 하라고, 만들라고 — the ㄹ stays). ㄷ and ㅂ verbs change before 으 as usual: 듣다 → 들으라고, 돕다 → 도우라고. 'Don't …' (-지 마세요) becomes -지 말라고: 밤에 떠들지 말라고 했어요. A favour asked with -아/어 주세요 needs one more choice. If the favour is for the person who asked, say 달라고: 리사: 「음악을 꺼 주세요.」 → 리사 씨가 음악을 꺼 달라고 했어요. If it is for someone else, say 주라고: 선생님: 「리사 씨에게 보여 주세요.」 → 선생님이 리사 씨에게 보여 주라고 하셨어요. The tense goes on 하다 at the end (했어요, or 하셨어요 for a teacher), never before -(으)라고. Don't mix it up with N(이)라고 from Lesson 1: 학생이라고 passes on a noun, 가라고 passes on an instruction.
