V-자고 하다 — passing on a suggestion — 'let's …' and 'let's not …'

Passing on a suggestion — 'let's …' and 'let's not …'. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 2: 방을 바꿔 달라고 해 봐 (Ask them to change your room — passing on requests).

What it means

-자고 하다 passes on a suggestion — 'let's …'. The person may have said 같이 가요, 갑시다, 갈까요? or, in 반말, 가자: all of them become 가자고. -자고 goes straight onto the verb stem, with or without a 받침 (먹자고, 가자고), and nothing in front of it changes: ㄹ stays (만들자고), and ㄷ and ㅂ verbs keep their shape (듣자고, 돕자고). 'Let's not …' (-지 맙시다, -지 말자) becomes -지 말자고: 밤에는 전화하지 말자고 했어요. Compare Grammar 1: -(으)라고 passes on 'you do it', -자고 passes on 'let's do it together'. The tense goes on 하다 (만들자고 했어요). To say you will suggest something to someone, use -(으)ㄹ게요: 오늘 저녁에 같이 이야기하자고 할게요.
