V-자마자 — as soon as … · the moment … — one thing right after another
As soon as … · the moment … — one thing right after another. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 10: 수업 끝나자마자 알바하러 가요 (Straight from class to my part-time job — squeezing time).
What it means
V-자마자 joins two actions with no time in between: 수업이 끝나자마자 알바하러 가요 'the moment class ends, I go to my part-time job'. Take 다 off any verb and add 자마자 — a 받침 makes no difference: 끝나자마자, 먹자마자, 오자마자. Because 자 begins with a consonant, nothing else changes either: ㄹ stays (만들자마자, 놀자마자), and ㄷ and ㅂ verbs keep their stems (듣자마자, 눕자마자). The two halves may have different subjects: 밖에 나가자마자 비가 왔어요 'it started raining the moment I went out'. -았/었- never goes before -자마자 — the tense sits on the last verb: 끝나자마자 갔어요, 끝나자마자 갈 거예요. Unlike -느라고 (Lesson 3A-2), the second half can be a request, a suggestion or a promise: 도착하자마자 전화하세요, 알바가 끝나자마자 전화할게요. Compare -(으)ㄴ 후에 (Lesson 1B-7) and -고 나서 (Lesson 2A-5): they simply say 'after', while -자마자 stresses that the second thing follows straight away — which is why it is the natural way to describe a packed day. Add 바로 or 곧바로 and it sounds even quicker: 끝나자마자 바로 나갔어요.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |

| -자마자 | 동사 — 받침 O · 받침 X 모두 · ㄹ 받침도 그대로 | 끝나다 + 자마자 → 끝나자마자 |
Key points
- V-자마자 = as soon as … · the moment …: one form for every verb — 끝나자마자 · 먹자마자 · 오자마자 · 만들자마자 (ㄹ stays)
- No gap between the two actions. The tense goes on the last verb: 끝나자마자 갔어요 (끝났자마자 ✗). It can end with a request or a promise: 도착하자마자 전화하세요.
Examples
