V-는 데 (시간이) 걸리다 · (돈이) 들다 — it takes (time) to … · it costs (money, effort) to …

It takes (time) to … · it costs (money, effort) to …. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 10: 수업 끝나자마자 알바하러 가요 (Straight from class to my part-time job — squeezing time).

What it means

V-는 데 means 'in doing …' — 데 is a small noun for the doing of something — and it is followed by what that doing takes. For time, use 걸리다: 학교에서 카페까지 가는 데 30분 걸려요 'it takes 30 minutes to get from school to the cafe', 과제를 끝내는 데 세 시간 걸렸어요 'the assignment took three hours'. For money or effort, use 들다 'to be needed, to cost': 서울에서 한 달 사는 데 돈이 많이 들어요, 혼자 이사하는 데 힘이 많이 들었어요. The form never changes: take 다 off and add 는 데, with or without a 받침 (먹는 데, 가는 데). A stem that ends in ㄹ loses it, just as before -는 N (Lesson 2A-2): 만들다 → 만드는 데, 살다 → 사는 데, 놀다 → 노는 데. -았/었- does not go before 데; put the tense on 걸리다 or 들다: 걸렸어요, 걸릴 거예요, 들었어요. To ask, use 얼마나: 가는 데 얼마나 걸려요? 사는 데 얼마나 들어요? Mind the space. 가는 데 (today's pattern) and 가는데 (-는데, Lesson 2A-9, which sets the background: 카페에 가는데 비가 왔어요) sound exactly the same — you tell them apart by what comes next: 걸려요 and 들어요 belong to today's pattern.
