A-(으)ㄴ데도 불구하고 · N에도 불구하고 — despite … · even though … — the formal way, for speeches, notices and writing
Despite … · even though … — the formal way, for speeches, notices and writing. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 9: 한글날에 대해 들어 봤어요? (Have you heard about Hangeul Day? — holidays and culture).
What it means
-(으)ㄴ데도 불구하고 is the formal, emphatic version of -(으)ㄴ데도/-는데도 (Lesson 3A-7): 'even though …, despite the fact that …'. Make the -는데도 form first, then add 불구하고: adjectives take -(으)ㄴ데도 (바쁘다 → 바쁜데도 불구하고, 춥다 → 추운데도 불구하고); verbs and 있다/없다 take -는데도 (오다 → 오는데도 불구하고, 있다 → 있는데도 불구하고); for the past add -았/었는데도 (있었는데도 불구하고, 바빴는데도 불구하고); a noun takes 인데도 (외국 사람인데도 불구하고). After a plain noun, use N에도 불구하고 'despite N': 비에도 불구하고, 추운 날씨에도 불구하고. The second part states what happened anyway — not a request or a suggestion. You hear it in speeches, at ceremonies and weddings and on the news, and you read it in notices and essays: 바쁘신데도 불구하고 와 주셔서 감사합니다 is the standard opening thank-you. In a chat with friends it sounds stiff — there, -는데도 alone is enough. At the start of a written sentence, 그럼에도 불구하고 means 'nevertheless'.
