N에 대해(서) · N에 대한 N — about … · on … — the topic you talk, hear, read or write about

About … · on … — the topic you talk, hear, read or write about. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 9: 한글날에 대해 들어 봤어요? (Have you heard about Hangeul Day? — holidays and culture).

What it means

N에 대해(서) names the topic — 'about N, on N': 한글날에 대해 들어 봤어요? 'Have you heard about Hangeul Day?' It goes in front of verbs of knowing, saying and thinking: 알다, 모르다, 듣다, 말하다, 이야기하다, 쓰다, 읽다, 배우다, 발표하다, 생각하다. 받침 does not matter — it is always 에 대해(서), and 서 can be dropped with no change in meaning. To put the topic in front of a noun, use 에 대한: 한글에 대한 책 'a book about Hangeul', 추석에 대한 이야기 'a story about Chuseok'. Compare 을/를: 한글을 배워요 is learning the alphabet itself; 한글에 대해 배워요 is learning about it — its history and its story. In formal writing you will also see 에 대하여, the old written form of 에 대해. The tense always goes on the verb after it: 한글에 대해 들었어요, 한글에 대해 발표할 거예요.
