A/V-아야/어야 할 텐데(요) — I do hope … — a hope said with a little worry

I do hope … — a hope said with a little worry. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 8: 교통사고가 났다고요? (A traffic accident? — accidents and what followed).

What it means

-아/어야 할 텐데(요) joins two things you already know: -아/어야 하다 'must' (Lesson 1B-5) and -(으)ㄹ 텐데 'I'd imagine' (Lesson 3A-3). Together they say 'it really needs to …, and I'm a little worried it won't' — a hope said with worry. 민수 씨가 빨리 나아야 할 텐데요 'I do hope Minsu gets better soon'. It follows the 아/어 rule: after ㅏ or ㅗ, 아야 할 텐데요 (나아야, 좋아야, 와야); otherwise 어야 할 텐데요 (이겨야, 있어야, 붙어야); 하다 becomes 해야 할 텐데요 (도착해야). For something bad that you hope won't happen, put 안 in front or use -지 않아야: 내일은 비가 안 와야 할 텐데요, 늦지 않아야 할 텐데요. It is usually about someone else or about things you can't control — the weather, an exam, a friend's health — so it is the natural reply to worrying news. With close friends leave off 요 (빨리 나아야 할 텐데); for someone you respect add -(으)시- (할아버지가 빨리 나으셔야 할 텐데요). -았/었- does not go in front. Compare -았/었으면 좋겠어요 (Lesson 2A-4), a plain wish: 빨리 나았으면 좋겠어요 — -아/어야 할 텐데요 adds the worry.
