A-다고(요)? · V-ㄴ/는다고(요)? · N(이)라고(요)? — you said …? — checking what you heard, and showing surprise

You said …? — checking what you heard, and showing surprise. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 8: 교통사고가 났다고요? (A traffic accident? — accidents and what followed).

What it means

When you hear something surprising, or don't quite catch it, Korean repeats the words back with -다고요? — literally 'you're saying that …?'. It is -다고 하다 from Lesson 3A-1 without 하다, with 요 on the end: 교통사고가 났다고요? 'You had a traffic accident?!'. The forms are the same as in -다고 하다: adjectives and 있다/없다 take -다고요? (아프다고요?, 없다고요?); verbs take -ㄴ다고요? after a vowel or ㄹ (간다고요?, 만든다고요?) and -는다고요? after a 받침 (먹는다고요?); nouns take -(이)라고요? (병원이라고요?, 702호라고요?). For the past use -았/었다고요? (넘어졌다고요?), and for plans -(으)ㄹ 거라고요?. If you missed one word, put a question word in its place: 뭐라고요? 'Sorry, what?', 몇 호라고요? 'Which room did you say?', 언제라고요? 'When?'. Say it with a rising tone. With a falling tone the same ending repeats what YOU said — 내일 간다고요. 'I said I'm going tomorrow' — which can sound impatient, so be careful with it, especially with older people.
