아무리 A/V-아/어도 — no matter how … · however … — the result stays the same
No matter how … · however … — the result stays the same. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3A, lesson 8: 교통사고가 났다고요? (A traffic accident? — accidents and what followed).
What it means
아무리 A/V-아/어도 means 'no matter how …': however big the first part is, the second part stays the same. 아무리 바빠도 신호는 꼭 지키세요 'However busy you are, always obey the traffic lights', 아무리 기다려도 버스가 안 와요 'No matter how long I wait, the bus doesn't come'. -아/어도 follows the same vowel rule as -아요/어요 — make the -아요/어요 form and change 요 to 도: after ㅏ or ㅗ, 아도 (바빠도, 와도); otherwise 어도 (먹어도, 기다려도); 하다 becomes 해도 (급해도). Irregular verbs change just as they do in -아요/어요: 낫다 → 나아도, 가깝다 → 가까워도, 듣다 → 들어도. After a noun, use N이어도 / 여도 (아무리 친구여도). Without 아무리, -아/어도 alone means 'even if': 내일 비가 와도 갈 거예요. For something already over, use -았/었어도: 아무리 조심했어도 사고는 날 수 있었어요. Don't mix it up with -아/어도 되다 (Lesson 2B-5): 먹어도 돼요? asks for permission. Compare -(으)ㄴ데도 / -는데도 (Lesson 3A-7), which reports one real fact: 많이 먹었는데도 배가 고파요. 아무리 -아/어도 is the natural way to warn, comfort and give firm advice: 아무리 괜찮아도 병원에 한번 가 보세요.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -아도 | ㅏ · ㅗ (ㅡ 탈락 · ㅅ 불규칙도) | 바쁘다 (ㅡ) + 아도 → 아무리 바빠도 |
| -어도 | 그 외 (ㅂ → 워도) | 먹다 + 어도 → 아무리 먹어도 |
| 해도 | 하다 | 급하다 → 아무리 급해도 |
Key points
- 아무리 + A/V-아/어도 = no matter how …: ㅏ · ㅗ → 아도 (바빠도 · 와도) · 그 외 → 어도 (먹어도 · 기다려도) · 하다 → 해도 (급해도)
- Without 아무리, -아/어도 alone = even if: 비가 와도 갈 거예요. Past: -았/었어도. Not the same as -아/어도 되다 (Lesson 2B-5 — permission).
Examples
