무엇이든(지) · 언제든지 · 누구든지 · N(이)든(지) — any … at all — it doesn't matter which: open offers and free choices
Any … at all — it doesn't matter which: open offers and free choices. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 2: 언제든지 일할 수 있어요 (I can work any time — jobs and ways of working).
What it means
Add 든지 to a question word and it means 'any … at all — it doesn't matter which': 누구든지 'anyone', 언제든지 'any time', 어디든지 'anywhere', 무엇이든지 'anything' (in speech 뭐든지). After a 받침 add 이든지: 무엇이든지, 무슨 일이든지 'any kind of work'. Compare 누구나 and 언제나 (Lesson 3A-2), which state that something is true of everyone or always; 든지 opens a choice to the listener, so it is the natural word for offers and invitations — 궁금한 게 있으면 언제든지 연락 주세요 'contact me any time if you have a question', 무슨 일이든지 열심히 하겠습니다 'I'll work hard at whatever I'm given'. With two nouns, N(이)든지 N(이)든지 means 'N or N, whichever you like': 커피든지 차든지 다 괜찮아요. It replaces 이/가 and 을/를 (커피를 → 커피든지) but follows other particles: 어디에서든지, 누구하고든지. In everyday speech the 지 is often dropped: 언제든 오세요, 뭐든 괜찮아요. 든지 does not change the verb at the end, which keeps its own tense.
