A-다면 · V-ㄴ/는다면 · N(이)라면 — if … (really happened) · if I were … — imagining and 'what if' questions

If … (really happened) · if I were … — imagining and 'what if' questions. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 2: 언제든지 일할 수 있어요 (I can work any time — jobs and ways of working).

What it means

-다면 means 'if' when you are imagining: something that may or may not happen, or that isn't true at all. 만약 합격한다면 정말 기쁠 거예요 'if I get the job, I'll be really happy' — Anna doesn't know yet. It is built like the quoted -다고 (Lesson 3A-1): adjectives and 있다/없다 add -다면 (바쁘다면, 시간이 있다면); verbs add -ㄴ다면 after a vowel or ㄹ (간다면, 합격한다면; 살다 → 산다면) and -는다면 after a 받침 (먹는다면); nouns take 이라면 after a 받침 and 라면 after a vowel (사장이라면, 부자라면). Sentences often start with 만약(에) or 만일, and the result usually ends in -(으)ㄹ 거예요 or -고 싶어요. Compare -(으)면 (Level 1A), the everyday 'if': 비가 오면 집에 있을 거예요 is a normal plan, while 만약 내일 눈이 온다면 is a 'what if'. Put -았/었- before 다면 to imagine the past differently — 'if … had …': 한국어를 배우지 않았다면 이 일을 몰랐을 거예요. -다면 is very common in interview questions: 만약 우리 회사에서 일하게 된다면 어떤 일을 하고 싶어요?
