A/V-다거나 · V-ㄴ/는다거나 — things like … or … — giving a few examples, not the whole list

Things like … or … — giving a few examples, not the whole list. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 2: 언제든지 일할 수 있어요 (I can work any time — jobs and ways of working).

What it means

-다거나 gives examples — 'things like … or …' — without listing everything. It is built like the quoted -다고 (Lesson 3A-1): adjectives, 있다/없다 and the past -았/었- add -다거나 (아프다거나, 일이 있다거나, 늦었다거나); verbs add -ㄴ다거나 after a vowel or ㄹ (쉰다거나, 번역한다거나; 놀다 → 논다거나) and -는다거나 after a 받침 (먹는다거나). With nouns it is N(이)라거나 (번역이라거나). You usually give two examples and finish with 하다: … 한다거나 … 한다거나 해요, … 하면 (if something like that happens), … 하는 일 (work such as …). Compare V-거나 (Lesson 2A-1), a plain 'or': 영화를 보거나 친구를 만나요 names two choices, while 영화를 본다거나 친구를 만난다거나 해요 picks two examples from a longer list, so it sounds softer and more open. It is very handy at interviews and when you explain a job or a rule: 모르는 게 있다거나 문제가 생긴다거나 하면 언제든지 물어보세요. The tense of the whole sentence goes on the final 하다: 주문을 받는다거나 음료를 만든다거나 했어요.
