N만 하다 —가야금이 사람 키만 해요 — as big as … · about the size of … — sizes by comparison

As big as … · about the size of … — sizes by comparison. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 7: 가야금이 사람 키만 해요 (A gayageum as tall as a person — describing shapes and feelings).

What it means

N만 하다 tells you how big something is by holding it up against something everyone knows: 가야금이 사람 키만 해요 'a gayageum is about as tall as a person', 새 휴대폰이 손바닥만 해요 'the new phone is the size of my palm'. 만 goes straight onto the noun, whether it ends in a 받침 or not, and 하다 changes like any adjective. Before a noun it becomes N만 한 N: 손바닥만 한 가야금 'a palm-sized gayageum', 사람만 한 인형 'a teddy bear as big as a person'. Don't mix it up with the 만 of Level 1B, 'only' (커피만 마셔요): when 하다 follows, it means size. N만큼 (Lesson 3B-5) is a close cousin, but it needs an adjective that says which quality is the same — 사람 키만큼 길어요, 형만큼 잘해요 — while N만 하다 usually means size by itself. Koreans use it all the time, often with a smile: 손바닥만 한 방 'a room the size of your palm' is a tiny room. The tense goes on 하다: 작년에는 강아지가 고양이만 했어요, 내년에는 동생이 저만 할 거예요.
