A/V-기로 유명하다 —이 시장은 떡이 맛있기로 유명해요 — famous for being … · well known for doing …

Famous for being … · well known for doing …. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 7: 가야금이 사람 키만 해요 (A gayageum as tall as a person — describing shapes and feelings).

What it means

A/V-기로 유명하다 says what something or someone is well known for: 이 시장은 떡이 맛있기로 유명해요 'this market is famous for its delicious rice cakes'. Any adjective or verb stem takes 기로, with or without a 받침: 싸기로, 아름답기로, 장구를 잘 치기로 유명해요. If what is famous is simply a thing, use N(으)로 유명하다: 이 시장은 떡으로 유명해요, 제주도는 경치로 유명해요 — and -기로 유명하다 adds what it is about that thing: 경치가 아름답기로 유명해요. To ask, say 거기는 뭐로 유명해요? Nothing goes before 기로 — no -았/었- — so the tense sits on 유명하다: 옛날에는 이 시장이 싸기로 유명했어요. For someone older, honour both parts: 할머니는 친절하시기로 유명하세요, 할아버지는 장구를 잘 치시기로 유명하셨어요. Use it for things many people know — a place, a shop, a public figure, a whole school. Said about a friend's habit (늦게 오기로 유명해요), it is a joke — fine between friends, but it can sting.
