A/V-다고 · V-ㄴ/는다고 · N(이)라고 (이유) —바쁘다고 약속을 미뤘어요 — because (they say) … — the reason someone gives

Because (they say) … — the reason someone gives. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 8: 두 사람이 연인 사이라니요? (Those two are a couple? — rumours and hearsay).

What it means

After a whole sentence, -다고 can give a reason — not a plain fact, but the reason a person gives, or the reason that seems to lie behind what they do: 유나 씨가 바쁘다고 약속을 미뤘어요 'Yuna put off our plans — because she was busy, she said'. The shape is exactly the -다고 of indirect speech (Lesson 3A-1). Adjectives and 있다/없다 add -다고 (바쁘다고, 시간이 없다고); verbs add -ㄴ다고 after a vowel or ㄹ, which drops (간다고, 놀다 → 논다고), and -는다고 after a 받침 (먹는다고); nouns add 이라고 after a 받침 and 라고 after a vowel (주말이라고, 친구라고). What tells the two apart is what comes next: with 하다, 말하다 or 묻다 you are passing on words (바쁘다고 했어요), but with any other action you are giving a reason (바쁘다고 안 왔어요). For a reason that has already happened use -았/었다고 (감기에 걸렸다고 집에서 쉬었어요), and for an intention -겠다고 (다이어트를 하겠다고 저녁을 안 먹어요). Because it reports someone else's reason, it often sounds a little distant — even doubtful — so for your own plain reasons keep to -아/어서: 저는 바빠서 못 갔어요. With a noun it often explains what people do on a special day: 생일이라고 친구들이 케이크를 사 왔어요.
