A/V-다니(요) · N(이)라니(요) —두 사람이 연인 사이라니요? — What? …? — surprise and disbelief at what you've just heard

What? …? — surprise and disbelief at what you've just heard. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 8: 두 사람이 연인 사이라니요? (Those two are a couple? — rumours and hearsay).

What it means

-다니(요)? repeats what you have just heard and shows surprise, doubt or even protest: 두 사람이 사귄다니요? 'What? They're going out? (I can't believe it)'. Take the sentence you heard and add -다니요: adjectives and 있다/없다 take -다니요 (바쁘다니요, 시험이 없다니요); verbs take -ㄴ다니요 after a vowel or ㄹ, which drops (사귄다니요, 놀다 → 논다니요), and -는다니요 after a 받침 (먹는다니요); nouns take 이라니요 after a 받침 and 라니요 after a vowel (거짓말이라니요, 연인 사이라니요), and 아니다 becomes 아니라니요. News about something that has already happened takes -았/었다니요: 헤어졌다니요? Without 요 and with a comma it opens a sentence, and your feeling follows: 두 사람이 연인 사이라니, 믿을 수 없어요 · 시험이 없다니, 정말 좋아요. With close friends drop 요: 사귄다니? · 데이트라니! It is not the same as -다고요? (Lesson 3A-8): 사귄다고요? simply checks 'did you say they're going out?', while 사귄다니요? says 'how can that be?' Said flat and sharp to an older person, -다니요? can sound like an objection, so a softer 정말요? or 그래요? often comes first.
