A-(으)ㄴ 척하다 · V-는 척하다 —유나 씨가 저를 못 본 척했어요 — pretending — acting as if …

Pretending — acting as if …. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 8: 두 사람이 연인 사이라니요? (Those two are a couple? — rumours and hearsay).

What it means

-(으)ㄴ/는 척하다 means 'to pretend': you act as if something were true when it isn't. 유나 씨는 저를 아는데 모르는 척했어요 'Yuna knows me, but she acted as if she didn't'. It is built like a modifier in front of the noun 척 ('a pretence'): adjectives take -(으)ㄴ (바쁜 척, 괜찮은 척, 아픈 척), and those ending in 있다/없다 take 는 (재미있는 척); verbs take -는 (모르는 척, 자는 척, 듣는 척), and a stem ending in ㄹ drops it (알다 → 아는 척). To pretend that something has already happened — or has not — use the past modifier -(으)ㄴ: 못 본 척 'pretending not to have seen', 숙제를 다 한 척 'pretending to have finished the homework'. With a noun, use 인: 학생인 척. The tense always goes on 하다, never in front of 척: 바쁜 척했어요, 모르는 척할게요 (봤는 척 ✗). Compare -는 것 같다 (Lesson 2A-4), which is an honest guess: 유나 씨가 저를 모르는 것 같아요 'Yuna doesn't seem to know me'. Pretending is not always sly: 모르는 척해 주세요 asks someone to act as if they knew nothing — to spare someone's feelings or to keep a surprise. 아는 척하다 can also mean 'to show off what you know' — or, with someone you have met before, simply 'to say hello' (길에서 아는 척했어요).
