V-는 길에 —학교에 오는 길에 하늘마트에 들렀어요 — on the way … · while you're going somewhere anyway

On the way … · while you're going somewhere anyway. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 6: 전기를 아껴 쓰지 않으면 안 돼요 (We have to save electricity — living wisely at home).

What it means

V-는 길에 means 'on the way': you are going somewhere anyway, and on the way you do something else — 학교에 오는 길에 하늘마트에 들렀어요 'I dropped into Haneul Mart on my way to school'. It goes with verbs of going and coming: 가다, 오다, 다니다, 들어오다, 돌아가다, 출근하다, 퇴근하다. The form never changes: always 는 길에, with or without 받침 (가는 길에, 오는 길에, 퇴근하는 길에). -았/었- cannot go before it, and neither can -(으)ㄴ: the tense comes at the end of the sentence — 오는 길에 들렀어요, 가는 길에 들를게요. What follows is usually a short stop or an errand: 들르다, 사다, 맡기다, 찾다, and -아/어다 주다 (Lesson 2B-9) for an errand for someone else — 집에 오는 길에 우유 좀 사다 줄래요? To say where you are headed right now, use -는 길이에요: 지금 집에 가는 길이에요 'I'm on my way home'. Compare -다가 (Lesson 2A-7), where the going is interrupted or changes (가다가 친구를 만났어요), and -는 동안 (Lesson 2B-11), which covers the whole time (가는 동안 음악을 들어요).
