V-아/어 두다 —안 쓰는 플러그는 뽑아 두세요 — do … and leave it that way · do … now, for later

Do … and leave it that way · do … now, for later. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 6: 전기를 아껴 쓰지 않으면 안 돼요 (We have to save electricity — living wisely at home).

What it means

V-아/어 두다 means doing something and then leaving it that way, usually so that it is ready or safe for later: 안 쓰는 플러그는 뽑아 두세요 'keep the plugs you aren't using pulled out'. Build it from the -아요/어요 form, just like -아/어 놓다 (Lesson 2B-6): ㅏ or ㅗ → 아 두다 (닫아 두다, 뽑아 두다, 사 두다), everything else → 어 두다 (넣어 두다, 꺼 두다, 적어 두다), and 하다 → 해 두다 (준비해 두다). Stems change as they do in -아요/어요: 잠그다 → 잠가 두다, 끄다 → 꺼 두다. The two endings are very close and often interchangeable — 창문을 닫아 놓았어요 = 창문을 닫아 뒀어요 — but 두다 has a stronger sense of keeping: storing food (냉장고에 넣어 두세요), saving things for later (겨울에 쓸 이불을 사 뒀어요), and keeping information in your head (알아 두세요, 기억해 두세요, 적어 두세요). That is why labels, instructions and notices usually choose 두다. The tense and the ending go on 두다: 두어요 → 둬요, 두었어요 → 뒀어요, 둘게요, 두세요, 두면. On its own, 두다 means 'to put or leave something somewhere' (Level 1B): 가방은 여기에 두세요.
