V-(으)ㄴ 다음에 —사진을 찍은 다음에 유리를 치우세요 — after … — saying what comes next
After … — saying what comes next. Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 9: 거울이 깨지고 말았어요 (The mirror ended up broken — mistakes and apologies).
What it means
V-(으)ㄴ 다음에 puts two actions in order: the first is finished, then the next one happens — 사진을 찍은 다음에 유리를 치우세요 'after you take a photo, clear up the glass'. 다음 means 'next', and -(으)ㄴ is the 'done' noun-modifier of Lesson 2A-2. After a 받침 add 은 다음에 (찍은 다음에, 먹은 다음에); after a vowel add ㄴ 다음에 (쓴 다음에, 한 다음에); a stem ending in ㄹ loses it (만들다 → 만든 다음에, 살다 → 산 다음에), and irregular verbs change as they always do before 으 (듣다 → 들은 다음에, 돕다 → 도운 다음에). It means the same as -(으)ㄴ 후에 (Level 1B) and -고 나서 (Lesson 2A-5); -(으)ㄴ 다음에 is the everyday choice for instructions and procedures, while 후에 sounds a little more formal. With a noun, just say N 다음에: 수업 다음에 만나요. -았/었- never goes before it — the tense comes at the end of the sentence: 수업이 끝난 다음에 관리실에 갔어요. Add 부터 for 'ever since': 한국에 온 다음부터 매일 일기를 써요.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -은 다음에 | 받침 O | 찍다 + 은 다음에 → 찍은 다음에 |
| -ㄴ 다음에 | 받침 X · ㄹ (만들다 → 만든) | 쓰다 + ㄴ 다음에 → 쓴 다음에 |
Key points
- V-(으)ㄴ 다음에 = after …: 받침 → 은 다음에 (찍은 다음에 · 먹은 다음에) · no 받침 or ㄹ → ㄴ 다음에 (쓴 다음에 · 한 다음에 · 만든 다음에 — the ㄹ drops)
- The same meaning as -(으)ㄴ 후에 (Level 1B) and -고 나서 (Lesson 2A-5). With a noun: N 다음에 (수업 다음에). The tense goes at the end: 먹은 다음에 갔어요.
Examples
