V-아/어 오다 —어린 시절부터 연극을 해 왔어요 — have been …-ing (all along, up to now)

Have been …-ing (all along, up to now). Korean grammar for intermediate learners — Level 3B, lesson 9: 거울이 깨지고 말았어요 (The mirror ended up broken — mistakes and apologies).

What it means

V-아/어 오다 draws a line from a point in the past up to now: 어린 시절부터 연극을 해 왔어요 'I have been doing theatre since I was a child'. Take the -아/어 form of the verb (the one you use for -아요/어요) and add 오다: ㅏ or ㅗ → 아 오다 (살아 왔어요, 만나 왔어요), other vowels → 어 오다 (배워 왔어요, 지켜 왔어요), 하다 → 해 오다 (일해 왔어요). Irregular verbs keep their usual shape: 돕다 → 도와 왔어요, 쓰다 → 써 왔어요. You will mostly hear it in the past, -아/어 왔어요, with N 동안 or N부터: 10년 동안 이 일을 해 왔어요; -아/어 오고 있어요 adds 'and I still am'. It is about time, not movement: 빵을 사 왔어요 means 'I bought some bread and came back with it', but 한국어를 배워 왔어요 means 'I have been learning Korean up to now'. It is the natural way to talk about your experience in an interview — 5년 동안 이 회사에서 일해 왔습니다 — and about people and things with a long history: 할아버지는 50년 동안 대전에서 살아 오셨어요, 15년 동안 써 온 거울. In Lesson 3B-11, -아/어 가다 carries the line on from now into the future.
