N(이)든(지) N(이)든(지) · A/V-든(지) A/V-든(지) — either … or … — it doesn't matter which, or whatever happens
Either … or … — it doesn't matter which, or whatever happens. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 10: 영화든 공연이든 (Film or stage, either is fine — choosing and judging what to see).
What it means
N(이)든(지) N(이)든(지) puts two (or more) choices side by side and says it makes no difference which one: 영화든 공연이든 다 좋아요 'film or stage — either is fine'. After a final consonant use 이든(지) (연극이든지, 토요일이든), after a vowel 든(지) (영화든지, 드라마든); 지 can be dropped with no change in meaning, and in speech the short 든 is the most common. It completes the 무엇이든지 · 언제든지 of Lesson 3B-2: there it was 'any one at all'; here the choices are named. With verbs and adjectives, A/V-든(지) A/V-든(지) says that whatever happens, the result is the same: 비가 오든지 눈이 오든지 공연은 해요 'rain or snow, the show goes on'. Opposites and 안 are typical — 비싸든지 싸든지, 오든지 안 오든지 — while V-든지 말든지 'do it or not' can sound cold, as if you don't care, so keep it for close friends or for jokes. The second half usually says it doesn't matter (상관없어요, 괜찮아요) or what will happen anyway (꼭 볼 거예요). Compare -거나 (Lesson 2A-1): 영화를 보거나 공연을 봐요 just lists the options, with no 'it doesn't matter'. For something already done, -았/었- can go inside: 누가 연출했든지 이야기가 좋으면 돼요.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N(이)든(지) N(이)든(지) | 명사 — 받침 O 이든(지) · 받침 X 든(지) · 지는 빼도 돼요 | 연극 + 이든지 → 연극이든지 |
| A/V-든(지) A/V-든(지) | 동사 · 형용사 — 받침과 상관없이 든(지) · 반대말 · 안 · 말다와 짝으로 | 오다 + 든지 → 오든지 |
Key points
- N(이)든(지) N(이)든(지) = either N or N — it doesn't matter which. After 받침 이든(지) (공연이든), after a vowel 든(지) (영화든); 지 can be dropped. The second half says it is all the same: 다 좋아요 · 상관없어요 · 괜찮아요.
- A/V-든(지) A/V-든(지) = whatever happens, the result doesn't change: 비가 오든지 눈이 오든지 공연은 해요. Often with opposites or 안: 비싸든지 싸든지 · 오든지 안 오든지. V-든지 말든지 can sound like 'I don't care'.
Examples
