N(이)야 · N(이)야말로 — N, of course · N, truly — singling something out

N, of course · N, truly — singling something out. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 10: 영화든 공연이든 (Film or stage, either is fine — choosing and judging what to see).

What it means

N(이)야말로 singles one thing out from all the others — 'this one, above all': 「바다 너머」야말로 이번 봄 최고의 작품이에요 'Beyond the Sea is truly the best show this spring'. After a final consonant use 이야말로 (이것이야말로, 작품이야말로), after a vowel 야말로 (리사 씨야말로, 제주도야말로); it can also follow 에: 이번에야말로 'this time, for sure'. The second half is usually high praise or a strong claim — 최고예요, 진짜 …예요, 제일 …, 꼭 … — and the tone is a little formal, which is why reviews, speeches, adverts and headlines love it. N(이)야 on its own is gentler: 'as for N, of course — that goes without saying'. 저야 좋지요 'me? of course I'd love to' is the classic happy reply to an invitation, and N(이)야 often sets up a contrast: 시간이야 많지요. 그런데 돈이 없어요 'time I've got plenty of — it's money I lack'. -지요 fits it well. Don't mix these particles up with 반말 이야 (Lesson 2B-10, 나는 학생이야), which ends a sentence; today's 야 and 야말로 always have more words after them. Being particles, they leave the verb free to take any tense: 그 공연이야말로 최고였어요.
