여간 A-(으)ㄴ 것이 아니다 · 여간 A/V-지 않다 — not just a little … — really, truly very

Not just a little … — really, truly very. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 10: 영화든 공연이든 (Film or stage, either is fine — choosing and judging what to see).

What it means

여간 is a curious word: it always comes with a negative, and the whole expression means 'very, really'. 여간 어렵지 않았어요 literally says 'it was not ordinarily hard' — that is, it was very hard: 표를 구하기가 여간 어렵지 않았어요 'getting tickets was no easy matter at all'. There are two shapes. 여간 A/V-지 않다 works with any adjective or verb, whatever the 받침 (여간 기쁘지 않아요, 여간 힘들지 않았어요). 여간 A-(으)ㄴ 것이 아니다 uses the adjective's -(으)ㄴ form — 여간 좋은 것이 아니다, 여간 독특한 것이 아니다 — while verbs and 있다 · 없다 take -는: 리사 씨는 연기를 여간 잘하는 게 아니에요, 여간 재미있는 게 아니었어요. In speech 것이 becomes 게. The tense goes at the very end, on 않다 or 아니다: 여간 어렵지 않았어요 · 여간 좋은 게 아니었어요. It sounds sincere and a little formal — good for praise to older people, speeches and written reviews (연출이 여간 독특한 게 아니었어요) — while friends would usually say 진짜 or 완전. Never use 여간 with a positive verb (여간 어려워요 ✗) or with 안 (여간 안 어려워요 ✗). The noun form 여간이 아니다 and the everyday 보통이 아니다 mean much the same: 수빈 씨 솜씨가 보통이 아니에요 'Subin's skill is no ordinary skill'.
