A/V-는 탓에 · N 탓에 — because of … (and it's to blame) — the cause of a bad result

Because of … (and it's to blame) — the cause of a bad result. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 3: 건강한 삶 (A healthy life — habits, excuses and warnings).

What it means

-는 탓에 gives the cause of a result you did not want, and it points a finger at that cause: 요즘 야근하는 탓에 운동을 못 해요 'I can't exercise because I'm working late these days'. 탓 is a noun meaning 'fault, blame', so the form is a modifier + 탓에, following the modifier rules you know from -는 N and -(으)ㄴ N (Lesson 2A-2): a verb about now or about a habit takes -는 탓에 (늦게 자는 탓에, 코를 고는 탓에 — the ㄹ of 골다 drops), an adjective takes -(으)ㄴ 탓에 (바쁜 탓에, 많은 탓에, 추운 탓에), and a verb about something that has already happened takes -(으)ㄴ 탓에 (늦게 잔 탓에, 과식한 탓에). With a noun, just add 탓에: 날씨 탓에, 스트레스 탓에. At the end of a sentence it becomes N 탓이다 or -(으)ㄴ 탓이다: 감기에 걸린 것은 추운 날씨 탓이에요 · 다 제 탓이에요 'it's all my fault'. Compared with 때문에 (Lesson 2A-8), which simply gives a reason, -는 탓에 sounds like blame, so it is used only for bad results; for a good result, use 덕분에: 선생님 덕분에 다 나았어요. Said about yourself it can sound like an excuse, and said about another person it can sound like a complaint — so choose it on purpose.
