V-다시피 — as you know · as you can see — starting from what the listener already knows

As you know · as you can see — starting from what the listener already knows. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 3: 건강한 삶 (A healthy life — habits, excuses and warnings).

What it means

-다시피 points at something your listener already knows, can see or has heard, and uses it as the starting point for what you want to say: 여러분도 알다시피 요즘 독감이 유행이에요 'as you all know, flu is going around'. It attaches to a small group of verbs of knowing and perceiving — 알다, 보다, 듣다, 느끼다, 짐작하다, 배우다, 말하다 — straight onto the stem, with no 받침 change: 알다시피, 보다시피, 짐작하다시피. When it refers back to something already said, heard or learned, put -았/었- in: 지난주에 말했다시피 'as I said last week', 1과에서 배웠다시피 'as we learned in Lesson 1'. In presentations and meetings, and whenever your listeners are above you, add the honorific -(으)시-: 아시다시피, 보시다시피, 들으셨다시피; plain 알다시피 said to a manager or a teacher sounds as if you were lecturing them. -다시피 never ends a sentence — the point you want to make always follows — which is why it is so common at the start of a presentation, a meeting or an explanation.
