A/V-(으)ㄹ 정도로 — so … that … · to the point of … — showing how bad (or how good) it is

So … that … · to the point of … — showing how bad (or how good) it is. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 3: 건강한 삶 (A healthy life — habits, excuses and warnings).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ 정도로 shows how strong something is by giving a picture of its degree: 잠을 못 잘 정도로 어깨가 쑤셔요 'my shoulders ache so badly that I can't sleep' — literally 'to the degree that I can't sleep'. 정도 is the noun 'degree, extent', and -(으)ㄹ is the modifier you already know, so the form follows the 받침 rule: -을 정도로 after a consonant (먹을 정도로, 없을 정도로) and -ㄹ 정도로 after a vowel or ㄹ (잘 정도로, 졸 정도로 — the ㄹ of 졸다 simply stays). Irregular stems change as usual: 춥다 → 추울 정도로, 듣다 → 들을 정도로. The picture is very often something you cannot do — 못, -(으)ㄹ 수 없다, 힘들다 — because that is the clearest way to show how bad it is: 눈을 뜰 수 없을 정도로 피곤했어요. It works for good things too: 또 가고 싶을 정도로 맛있었어요. At the end of a sentence, use -(으)ㄹ 정도이다: 걷기 힘들 정도예요. Compared with 너무, or with 얼마나 -는지 모르다 (Lesson 3B-3), -(으)ㄹ 정도로 is concrete — which is why doctors, pharmacists and teachers who ask 얼마나 아파요? hope for this kind of answer. Do not put -았/었- in front of 정도로; the tense goes at the end: 눈물이 날 정도로 아팠어요.
