A/V-다면서(요)? — I hear that … — is that right? · checking news you heard

I hear that … — is that right? · checking news you heard. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 4: 그 소식 들었다면서요? (Did you hear the news? — checking what you heard, and what might have been).

What it means

-다면서요? checks news you heard from someone else — on the news, in a group chat, from a friend: 내일 대전에 눈이 많이 온다면서요? 'I hear it's going to snow a lot in Daejeon tomorrow — is that right?'. It is a short form of -다고 하면서요?, so it follows the plain -다 forms of Lesson 2B-7 and the reported speech of Lesson 3A-1: adjectives and 있다/없다 take -다면서요? (춥다면서요?, 재미있다면서요?); verbs take -ㄴ다면서요? after a vowel or ㄹ (온다면서요?, 산다면서요?) and -는다면서요? after other 받침 (먹는다면서요?); nouns take -(이)라면서요? (매진이라면서요?, 녹화라면서요?), and 아니다 becomes 아니라면서요?. For the past, put -았/었- in front: 뉴스에 나왔다면서요?. It is very often about the listener's own news, because they know best — 홍보 동영상에 출연했다면서요? — and among friends you drop 요: 간다면서? Don't mix it up with -다고요? (Lesson 3A-8), which repeats something you have only just heard because it surprised you or you didn't catch it. The usual answers are 네, 맞아요 or 아니요, … followed by the real story.
