A/V-고(요)? — … and …? — adding one more question · N은/는요?

… and …? — adding one more question · N은/는요?. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4A, lesson 4: 그 소식 들었다면서요? (Did you hear the news? — checking what you heard, and what might have been).

What it means

-고요? adds one more question to what has just been said, on the same topic: 짐은 다 쌌어요? 따뜻한 옷도 챙겼고요? 'Have you packed? And have you got warm clothes, too?'. It is the -고요 of Lesson 1B-10 — 옷이 많아요. 값도 싸고요 — said with a rising voice. Like -고 (Lesson 1A-7), it never changes with 받침: 춥고요?, 건강하시고요?; the past goes in front (표는 예매했고요?), and a noun takes (이)고요? (생방송이고요?). It often comes with 도 (선물도 샀고요?), and it is a warm way to show you care about the details — parents and older colleagues use it a lot before a trip. N은/는요? is even shorter: it asks the same question about someone or something else — 저는 대전에 가요. 리사 씨는요? — or, after 그래서, asks for the rest of the story: 면접을 봤어요? 그래서 결과는요? Among friends, drop 요: 짐은 쌌고? · 너는?
