N은/는 … -다는 것이다 · -다는 점이다 — the point is that … — stating a strength, a problem or a feature in formal Korean

The point is that … — stating a strength, a problem or a feature in formal Korean. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 10: 졸업하면 무엇을 할까 (What next after graduation? — qualifications, examples and formal causes).

What it means

N은/는 … -다는 것이다 explains what a topic word amounts to — 'the thing is that …': 제 장점은 꼼꼼하다는 것입니다 'my strength is that I am meticulous'. Start with a topic noun such as 장점 'strength', 단점 'weakness', 문제 'problem', 특징 'feature', 이유 'reason' or 제가 배운 것 'what I learned', marked with 은/는, and finish with a clause + -다는 것이다. The clause takes the same shapes as reported speech (Level 3): adjectives -다는 (꼼꼼하다는, 많다는), verbs -ㄴ/는다는 (한다는, 듣는다는, ㄹ drops: 안다는), nouns -(이)라는 (근처라는, 학생이라는); past -았/었다는 and future -(으)ㄹ 거라는 work too. A sentence like 제 장점은 꼼꼼해요 sounds wrong because 'strength' and 'is meticulous' don't match — the -다는 것이다 ending fixes that. -다는 점이다 is a close cousin that points at one particular feature or problem (점 'point'): 문제는 시간이 없다는 점이다. Both are typical of writing, cover letters, interviews and presentations; in a cover letter end with -다는 것입니다 / -다는 점입니다, and in conversation say -다는 거예요. This pattern is also the backbone of TOPIK II writing answers.
