Because of … · caused by … — formal causes in cover letters and reports (review and extension of Lesson 3B-11). Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 10: 졸업하면 무엇을 할까 (What next after graduation? — qualifications, examples and formal causes).

What it means

N(으)로 인해(서) gives a cause in formal Korean — 'owing to, due to, because of': 제 실수로 인해 일정이 하루 늦어졌습니다 'owing to my mistake, the schedule was delayed by a day'. You first met it in a notice in Lesson 3B-11; here it moves into cover letters, reports and news-style sentences. After a noun with 받침 use 으로 인해 (경험으로 인해, 사건으로 인해); after a vowel or ㄹ use 로 인해 (실수로 인해, 변화로 인해, 일로 인해). 서 is optional. The cause is a noun — typically an event, a change, a mistake or a situation — and the result can be bad or good (그 일로 인해 좋은 습관이 생겼습니다). To put the cause right in front of a noun, use (으)로 인한 N: 실수로 인한 문제 'a problem caused by a mistake', 문화 차이로 인한 오해 'a misunderstanding caused by cultural differences', 경쟁으로 인한 스트레스 'stress from competition'. That phrase is a favourite in cover letters, where you describe a problem and how you solved it. In conversation it sounds stiff; say N 때문에 or -아/어서 instead, and use 덕분에 when you are grateful for the cause.
