A/V-다거나 · V-ㄴ/는다거나 · N(이)라거나 — things like … or … — giving examples in an interview (review and extension of Lesson 3B-2)

Things like … or … — giving examples in an interview (review and extension of Lesson 3B-2). Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 10: 졸업하면 무엇을 할까 (What next after graduation? — qualifications, examples and formal causes).

What it means

-다거나 lists a few examples out of many — 'things like …, or …': 주말에는 아이를 돌본다거나 영상을 찍는다거나 해요 'at weekends I do things like looking after a child or filming videos'. You met it in Lesson 3B-2; here we take it into interviews and cover letters. The shapes follow reported speech: adjectives -다거나 (바쁘다거나, 힘들다거나), verbs -ㄴ/는다거나 (돌본다거나, 읽는다거나; ㄹ drops: 만든다거나), nouns -(이)라거나 (영어라거나, 인턴이라거나); past -았/었다거나 works too. Normally you give two examples and close with 하다 (…다거나 …다거나 해요). The most useful extension is -다거나 하는 N, where the examples describe a noun: 일정을 챙긴다거나 자료를 정리한다거나 하는 일을 잘합니다 'I'm good at tasks such as keeping track of schedules and organising material'. With a single example + 하면 it means 'if … or anything like that': 힘들다거나 하면 언제든지 말해. Compared with plain -거나 (Level 2A), which offers a simple either-or, -다거나 signals 'for instance — and there could be more', so it sounds thoughtful and concrete in an interview answer.
