N치고 · N치고는 — every … almost without exception · for a … — what's typical, and what's surprising
Every … almost without exception · for a … — what's typical, and what's surprising. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 3: 알고 보니 그런 뜻이었어요 (So that's what it meant — culture gaps and misunderstandings).
What it means
N치고 sums up a whole group: 'every N, practically without exception'. It always comes with a negative after it — 없다, 별로 없다, 안 or 못: 아이치고 과자를 싫어하는 아이는 별로 없어요 'hardly any child dislikes sweets', 싼 물건치고 오래 쓸 수 있는 것은 별로 없어요 'cheap things hardly ever last'. Attach 치고 to the noun, with or without 받침. With 는 added, N치고는 means 'for an N' or 'considering it is N': what you see is not what you'd normally expect of N — 4월치고는 날씨가 정말 덥네요 'it's really hot for April', 처음치고는 정말 잘했어요 'you did really well for a first time', 학생 식당치고는 맛있어요 'the food's good for a student cafeteria'. Both are particles, so the verb after them can take any tense. Be careful when N is a group of people. 외국 사람치고는 한국어를 잘하네요 is usually meant as warm praise, but it also says 'I didn't expect a foreigner to be good at this', so it can sting — and the same is true of 여자치고는, 나이치고는 or 지방 사람치고는. A kinder compliment praises the person, not the group: 한국어를 정말 잘하시네요. About a situation, N치고는 is perfectly friendly: 처음치고는 정말 잘했어요. N치고 about a group of people is also a strong generalisation; to say that not everyone is the same, use N(이)라고 (해서) 다 … 것은 아니다 (Lesson 3B-8).
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N치고 | 받침이 있어도 없어도 치고 — 뒤에 늘 부정: 없다 · 별로 없다 · 안/못 (모든 N이 거의 그래요) | 아이 + 치고 → 아이치고 |
| N치고는 | 보통 N에서 생각하는 것과 달라요 — 생각보다 더 · 덜 | 4월 + 치고는 → 4월치고는 |
Key points
- N치고 = every N, (almost) without exception — always with a negative after it: N치고 … 없다 · 별로 없다 · 안/못 …. 받침 doesn't matter: 아이치고 · 학생치고 · 회사원치고. It is a strong generalisation, so be careful when the N is a group of people.
- N치고는 = for an N · considering it's N — the result is not what you'd expect: 4월치고는 덥네요 · 처음치고는 잘했어요 · 학생 식당치고는 맛있어요. About a person's group it can sting: 외국 사람치고는 한국어를 잘하네요 is meant as praise, but 한국어를 정말 잘하시네요 is kinder.
Examples
