A-다는 것은 N에서/N(으)로 알 수 있다 — you can tell … from … — giving evidence in written Korean

You can tell … from … — giving evidence in written Korean. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 3: 알고 보니 그런 뜻이었어요 (So that's what it meant — culture gaps and misunderstandings).

What it means

-다는 것은 … 알 수 있다 states a fact and then points to the evidence for it, the way a column, a report or a TOPIK essay does: 한국 사람들이 나이를 중요하게 생각한다는 것은 호칭에서 알 수 있다 'that Koreans think age matters can be seen from the forms of address they use'. The part before 것은 is the reported-speech form of Level 3A (-다고 하다) shortened into a modifier: adjectives take -다는 (중요하다는, 많다는), verbs take -는다는 after a 받침 and -ㄴ다는 after a vowel or ㄹ (묻는다는, 생각한다는, 산다는), and nouns take -(이)라는 (인사라는, 학생이라는). For a fact in the past use -았/었다는 — for verbs too, with no 는: 그 말이 진심이었다는 것은 …, 날짜를 정했다는 것은 …. Then name the evidence. N에서 알 수 있다 points to something you can see or read the answer in (호칭에서, 옷차림에서, 대화에서); N(으)로 알 수 있다 points to what you used to tell (목소리로, 손바닥 모양으로); in many sentences either works. The tense of 'being able to tell' goes at the end: 알 수 있었다. The pattern belongs to written and formal Korean. In conversation it sounds careful and a little serious; people more often say …는 것을 보니 (judging from …): 손바닥을 아래로 하는 것을 보니 저를 부르시는 것 같아요.
