V-는 통에 · N 통에 — with all the … going on · in the chaos of … — a hectic cause and a bad result

With all the … going on · in the chaos of … — a hectic cause and a bad result. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 4: 비자 연장은커녕 (Extending my visa? I can't even… — paperwork, frustration and polite complaints).

What it means

-는 통에 gives the reason for something that went wrong when the reason is a hectic, noisy or confusing situation: 옆집이 이사하는 통에 서류를 하나도 못 읽었어요 'with the people next door moving out, I couldn't read a single document'. 통 here means the thick of a commotion, so the first half paints a scene with a lot going on, and the second half says what you couldn't do or what went wrong — 못 V, 정신이 없다, 잊어버리다, 늦다 and so on. Add -는 통에 to any verb stem, with or without 받침 (몰리는 통에, 이사하는 통에); a stem ending in ㄹ drops it (떠들다 → 떠드는 통에, 울다 → 우는 통에). With a noun for a chaotic time or event, just add 통에: 공사 통에, 이사 통에, 난리 통에, 전쟁 통에. The form stays -는 even for last week — the tense goes at the end of the sentence (떠드는 통에 잠을 못 잤어요). Adjectives don't take it (시끄러운 통에 ✗ — say 시끄러워서), although the set phrase 정신없는 통에 'in all the rush' is very common. Because it is always a complaint, it never introduces good news (친구가 도와주는 통에 ✗ → 도와준 덕분에). Compared with -는 탓에 (Lesson 4A-3), which points at whose fault it was, -는 통에 is about the chaos itself. In formal writing people use -(으)로 인해 (Lesson 3B-11) or -아/어서 instead.
