V-(으)ㄹ래야 V-(으)ㄹ 수(가) 없다 — I'd like to …, but it's just impossible — however hard you try

I'd like to …, but it's just impossible — however hard you try. Korean grammar for upper intermediate learners — Level 4B, lesson 4: 비자 연장은커녕 (Extending my visa? I can't even… — paperwork, frustration and polite complaints).

What it means

-(으)ㄹ래야 -(으)ㄹ 수(가) 없다 says that you want to do something, and perhaps try, but it is simply impossible: 5월 방문 예약은 잡을래야 잡을 수가 없어요 'however hard I try, I just can't get an appointment in May'. The same verb comes twice: first with -(으)ㄹ래야 'even if I try to', then with -(으)ㄹ 수(가) 없다. After a 받침 use -을래야 (먹을래야 먹을 수가 없다); after a vowel or ㄹ use -ㄹ래야 (잘래야 잘 수가 없다, 만들래야 만들 수가 없다); ㄷ-irregular verbs change as usual (듣다 → 들을래야 들을 수가 없다). With a 하다 verb the second half is often shortened to 할 수가 없다: 연장할래야 할 수가 없어요. 가 after 수 is optional but very common, because it adds weight. The cause is usually something outside you — no slots, noise, nerves, no money — so the sentence sounds frustrated or resigned. A favourite fixed use is 잊을래야 잊을 수가 없다 'I could never forget it', for a memory that stays with you, good or bad. Strictly, the dictionary spelling of the ending is -(으)려야 (먹으려야 먹을 수가 없다, 자려야 잘 수가 없다), and that is what you see in careful writing; -(으)ㄹ래야 is what most people actually say. The tense goes on 없다 at the end: 잘래야 잘 수가 없었어요.
