A/V-게 마련이다 — … is bound to … — what always happens to love and to people (Lesson 4A-6 -기 마련이다, now in arguments)
… is bound to … — what always happens to love and to people (Lesson 4A-6 -기 마련이다, now in arguments). Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5A, lesson 5: 연애도 앱으로 (Dating by app — dating apps, AI relationship advice, and a generation that doesn't date).
What it means
-게 마련이다 says that something naturally happens to anyone, at any time — exactly like -기 마련이다 from Lesson 4A-6: 오래 같이 살면 서로 닮게 마련이에요 'live together long enough and you are bound to grow alike'. Add it to any verb or adjective stem, whatever the 받침: 닮게, 끝나게 마련이에요. At Level 5 it often opens an argument in writing: first the rule everybody knows — …게 마련이다 — then the writer's own view after 그러나 or -지만: 처음의 두근거림은 줄게 마련이지만 그 자리에 정이 쌓인다. No -았/었- before 게, and a one-off event or a forecast needs -(으)ㄹ 거예요.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A/V-게 마련이다 | 형용사 · 동사 — 받침과 상관없이 (= -기 마련이다) | 닮다 → 닮게 마련이에요 |
| -게 마련이지만 · -게 마련인데 | 글 · 토의 — 모두가 아는 일 + 내 생각 | 두근거림은 줄게 마련이지만 정이 쌓인다 |
Key points
- -게 마련이다 = … is bound to … — the same as -기 마련이다 (Lesson 4A-6): 받침 doesn't matter (닮게 · 줄게 · 끝나게 마련이에요). General subject, no -았/었- before 게.
- Level 5: the rule is the first step of an argument — …게 마련이다. 그러나 … · …게 마련이지만 … — then comes your own view.
Examples
