V-는 이상 — since … (and that is settled) — a fact that leaves only one course
Since … (and that is settled) — a fact that leaves only one course. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 10: 비자와 건강보험 (Visas and health insurance — changing your status at the immigration counter, and getting a straight answer about your premium).
What it means
V-는 이상 is used when something is already a settled fact, so the next thing must be done: 한국에 사는 이상 보험료를 내야 해요. Verbs take -는 이상, actions already done -(으)ㄴ 이상, nouns N인 이상: 사는 이상 · 결정한 이상 · 학생인 이상. The second half is usually -아/어야 하다, -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 or -(으)면 안 되다. 「-는 한」 is a condition; 「-는 이상」 is a fact already fixed.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V-는 이상 | 동사 (지금 · 늘) | 살다 → 한국에 사는 이상 |
| V-(으)ㄴ 이상 | 동사 (이미 한 일) | 결정하다 → 결정한 이상 |
| N인 이상 | 명사 | 학생 → 학생인 이상 |
Key points
- V-는 이상 = since … (settled): 사는 이상 · 다니는 이상. Already done: -(으)ㄴ 이상 (결정한 이상). Noun: N인 이상.
- The second half is the only course: -아/어야 하다 · -(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다 · -(으)면 안 되다. Firmer than -(으)니까; 「-는 한」 is a condition, 「-는 이상」 a fixed fact.
Examples
