A-다기에/V-는다기에 — because (someone) said that … — acting on what you were told (and -(으)라기에 · -자기에)

Because (someone) said that … — acting on what you were told (and -(으)라기에 · -자기에). Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 3: 교수님께 메일을 보내다 (E-mailing a professor — formal requests, office hours, hearing 'no' and apologizing).

What it means

A-다기에 / V-ㄴ/는다기에 says that what someone told you made you do something: 교수님이 바쁘시다기에 시간을 바꿨어요 'I heard the professor was busy, so I changed the time'. It is -다고 하기에 shortened — the quoting -다고 하다 (Lesson 3A-1) plus -기에 (Lesson 4B-1). Adjectives take -다기에, verbs -ㄴ/는다기에, nouns (이)라기에; a command becomes -(으)라기에 and a suggestion -자기에 (Lesson 5B-1). It is used in writing and speech; in casual talk you also hear -다길래.
