A-기 그지없다 — … beyond words — the most formal way to say how deeply you feel
… beyond words — the most formal way to say how deeply you feel. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 3: 교수님께 메일을 보내다 (E-mailing a professor — formal requests, office hours, hearing 'no' and apologizing).
What it means
A-기 그지없다 says that a feeling is so great it has no end: 감사하기 그지없습니다 'I cannot thank you enough'. It goes only with adjectives — most often 감사하다 · 죄송하다 · 반갑다 · 기쁘다 · 아쉽다. It is very formal, so it appears in e-mails, letters and greetings, in -(스)ㅂ니다 or the written -다. Said to a friend it sounds stiff; there, use 정말 or 너무.
