I'm afraid that … / I wonder if … might — a careful worry, and a soft proposal with -(으)면 어떨까 합니다. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 3: 교수님께 메일을 보내다 (E-mailing a professor — formal requests, office hours, hearing 'no' and apologizing).

What it means

A/V-지 않을까 하다 voices a careful worry or guess: 늦지 않을까 해서 일찍 나왔어요 'I was afraid I'd be late, so I left early'. Although it has 않, it does not mean 'not late' — it means 'I might be late'. Add -지 않을까 하다 to adjectives and verbs; -지 않을까 해서 often gives the reason for what you did. To propose something gently, use -(으)면 어떨까 합니다: 금요일에 찾아뵈면 어떨까 합니다 'I wonder if I might visit you on Friday'.
