N은/는 말할 것도 없고 — not to mention N · let alone N — the obvious one first, then something more
Not to mention N · let alone N — the obvious one first, then something more. Korean grammar for advanced learners — Level 5B, lesson 9: 장학금과 증명서 (Scholarships and certificates — a scholarship notice, seven documents, a certificate kiosk, one missing paper and a call to Daejeon).
What it means
N은/는 말할 것도 없고 names something obvious first, as if it were not even worth saying, and adds a bigger or surprising second thing: 등록금은 말할 것도 없고 생활비까지 나와요. Add 은/는 말할 것도 없고 to the noun; the second part usually takes 도 or 까지. It works for good and bad things: 신청서는 말할 것도 없고 통장 사본까지 내야 해요. With a verb, say -는 것은 말할 것도 없고. It is close to N은/는 물론, but stronger.
Forms
| Pattern | When | Example |
|---|---|---|
| N은 말할 것도 없고 | 명사 (받침 ○) | 등록금 → 등록금은 말할 것도 없고 생활비까지 |
| N는 말할 것도 없고 | 명사 (받침 ✗) | 신청서 → 신청서는 말할 것도 없고 통장 사본까지 |
Key points
- N은/는 말할 것도 없고 N도/N까지 = not to mention … even …: 등록금은 말할 것도 없고 생활비까지. The obvious first, the big one second.
- Good and bad things alike. Close to N은/는 물론 (more neutral). With a verb: V-는 것은 말할 것도 없고.
Examples
